No rain. No sleet. No snow. Someone stopped us on the street the other day to complain about our wishing for snow. You're "all alone" in that one, we were told. Not so. There's plenty of people still hoping we'll see some snow before the winter passes into spring. Paxatawny Phil appar ently thinks its possible, too. Despite having had what NCNB chairman Hugh McColl called a "disappointing year," (net income was down from $4.62 per common share a year ago to $3.40), his bank still inspires confidence among cor porate leaders. In Business Week this week, 100 corporate treasurers sur veyed rated NCNB among the safest banks they would look to during a financial crisis. In Fortune's ninth annual Corporate Reputations survey, NCNB ranked second among the 8,000 executives and ana lysts surveyed. TRYON, N. C. 28782 Tucker Receives Life Sentence James Christopher Tucker was found guilty of second degree murder in the death of his two-year-old son by a jury in Columbus Friday. On Monday morning, the judge sentenced the Lynn man to life in prison. The defense immediately filed an appeal. Ash Wednesday Service At Holy Cross Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Tryon invites all to participate in a special worship service beginning the forty days of Tent. It will be held on Ash Wednesday, February 13th, at 7:30 p.m. with a celebration of Holy Communion and imposi tion of ashes. Ashes are used as a sign of penitence and' to remind us of our immortality. "Remember, 0 Man, that dust thou art and unto dust thou shall return." Ward is the son of Milton and Clara Ward of Tryon, She is a graduate of St. Michael's College in Vermont and works as a buyer for Jordan Nash. He is a graduate of East Ten nessee State University and is employed as vice president for national accounts with TIE Communications Inc. in Seym our, CT. The couple are to be married June 1. Read The Bulletin For I.,ocal News 20C Per Copy Congregational Joins Covenant With Habitat Recognizing that they have long been supporters of the Habitat movement, both locally and nationally, members of the Tryon Congregational Church voted al their annual meeting to become a "Convenant Church" with Habitat for Humanity. With this commitment the church promises to support Habitat's work in as many of the following ways as possible: Pray regularly for Habitat; Spread the word about Habitat; Actively observe the Interna tional Day of Prayer and Action for Human Habitat; Provide financial support; Present opportunities for volunteer ser vices. The convenant it seen as a special promises and agreement between partners in Christ. Bishop To Visit The Rt. Rev. Robert Hodges Johnson, Bishop of the Diocese of Western Carolina will make his official visitation to Good Shepherd Episcopal Church on Sunday, Feb. 10. The bishop will celebrate Holy Communion and preach at the 9 a.m. service. Following the service the bishop will meet with the con gregation in the parish hall, and all can enjoy one of those famous, old fashion Southern breakfasts for which James Bryan is noted. The bishop plans to meet with the vestry, also. Come and join us in our worship and fellowship.
